If Steven Pinker had (re)written Had Gadya...
Father spent Z$2.00 on the kid
the cat
the dog
the stick
the fire
the water
the ox
the butcher
the Grim Reaper
the LORD
vanquished
slew
killed
drank
quenched
burned
beat
bit
ate.
[“Z$” stands for zuz, which in the Aramaic of Had Gadya
is a quarter of a silver shekel – whence Z$2.00 for the “two zuzim”
(trei zuzei) of the Haggadah song.
There’s also a Hebrew word “zuz”,
meaning “move!” or “move it!”,
but I’m sure that that’s a mere coincidence.
And yes, in Aramaic trei means 2, not 3.]
